Welcome Claudia! http://www.madinkpress.com/forum/discussion/34/welcome-claudia Tue, 30 Nov 1999 00:00:00 -0500 Kalman 34@/forum/discussions Farwell Aodhan, but there is hope!

So the indefinite postpone was short lived… we’ll see how
this works out…

Aodhan drew …and Chris for me for over a year, which means
we’d been working together for nearly two.

Looking back on his early work with me, it’s easy to tell
how much he grew over that time, both as an artist and as a person. Aodhan Cummings,
I will miss you buddy.

The last great thing Aodhan did for me however was introduce
me to Claudia Miller, who will be taking up the mantel. Her artistry is extremely
different, but I think that in no time at all her art will be just as important
to …and Chris as Aodhan’s was.

my partnership with Claudia is new, however, and there hasn’t
been a lot of time to work the kinks out, so please bear with us as we figure
out the posting schedual.

A crisis of faith. http://www.madinkpress.com/forum/discussion/29/a-crisis-of-faith. Tue, 16 Nov 2010 14:20:00 -0500 Kalman 29@/forum/discussions
It seems we’ve fallen on hard times here at Mad Ink.

The store doesn’t seem like it’ll ever be up and running, and The City of Fever tarot cards are proving more and more difficult to produce. Conventions are costing more and earning us less, and I’ve had to succumb to Twitter and Facebook, both of which I find morally draining and the opposite of socializing. (Aaron Sorkin said it best: Social Networking sites are like Socializing as Reality TV is to reality.) We’ve lost URL addresses… it’s been one thing after another.

But saddest of all, this week Aodhan turned in his resignation.

Now Aodhan and I have been working together for over a year now, and it’s been a great run. Last year we had a system which worked pretty well. We did as many comics over the summer as possible, and then rode it out till Christmas where we did the next batch, and thus did them around his school schedule.

Unfortunately there were delays as there always is, and this summer we found ourselves scrambling to keep up. About a month ago we lost our buffer and have been unable to get it back, and Aodhan feels that he can no-longer juggle a once a week deadline and a college course load.

Understandable, but eminently regrettable. Aodhan has graciously agreed to give me another 4 comics (one month’s worth of story) to give me a chance (however small) to find a new artist before I start missing updates.

4 comics means we can (with some quick re-writes) finish up at least a chunk of the current story-line. We’ll be skipping or postponing the 6th Confessional, but we’ll at least get through the comic con story.

But finding a new artist is going to be an uphill battle. Aodhan is leaving some pretty big shoes to fill.

I’ll miss you dude.

Oh yeah! http://www.madinkpress.com/forum/discussion/26/space-marines-comics-and-boobs.-oh-yeah Tue, 30 Nov 1999 00:00:00 -0500 Kalman 26@/forum/discussions Warhammer 40k came first. Don’t get me wrong I like Starcraft just as much as
the next guy, but to suggest that it is on par with Warhammer would simply be
heresy.

To that end, today has been a good day. Warhammer 40000: Space
Marine
has a booth at NYCC. As part of their
publicity they have hired a very large well-built man to walk around in full
freaking Space Marine armor, complete with bolter and chain sword all weekend
at the convention. The outfit has sigils, marks of purity, and of course a
chain sword. And just in case I haven’t been clear: Chain sword.

I was lucky enough to see these gentlemen unpacking the
10x8x6 foot crate housing the Space Marine armor. The gentleman was unwrapping
one of the boots, which was nearly as tall as he was, and I stopped to watch
the armor pieces come out of the crate one at a time. We got to talking and I
was not only invited back into the changing room, but also handed a bolter.

On a totally unrelated note, I noticed that while I was
holding the bolter, it was only a good 5 feet to the door, and that these men
were currently holding many and various cumbersome objects.

There will also be a fully clad, just as large ork.

After I came to, I visited with Ryan Sohmer briefly and went in search of Tommy Castillo. I am not sure
if Tommy will be attending or not, but I wish him well if he was unable to make
it.

NYCC has already proven to
be a glorious con, and it hasn’t even started yet.

So come for the women!
Come for the Swag!
Or come for the Celebrities!

Or you can even come for us. Booth 2423. See you there!]]>

Try as i might spelling has always eluded me. If anything my spelling has gotten poorer over time, and while my grammar and vocabulary may be weightier than average, me spelling stinks so badly it could tranquilize a rhino.

To make matters worse we have about 50 and Chris strips which I've written largely without people to double check my spelling, and before you all tell me to use a spell-check, I routinely use three. i type the words i want into Google to make sure I'm close, i use the MS word spellchecker, and i generally run it by aaron before i let the comic hit the site.

still, things like "raped" instead of "wrapped" happen far too often, and there is no accounting for my poor copying skills, so i find myself here, night after night correcting mistakes as i come across them or they are pointed out to me.

while I'm at it, i fix the colors of the early strips, re-format the site... and make far too many posts on the forums.

if you see anything you think is a mistake (and mind you some of them ARE actually artistic choices) please feel free to point them out to me.]]>
City of Fever http://www.madinkpress.com/forum/discussion/18/city-of-fever Sat, 11 Sep 2010 21:37:00 -0400 somethingawkward 18@/forum/discussions I know self-publishing is difficult and expensive, but are there more tales of the Big Rot on the horizon? ]]> In other news: DragonCon a Drag! http://www.madinkpress.com/forum/discussion/17/in-other-news%3A-dragoncon-a-drag Tue, 30 Nov 1999 00:00:00 -0500 Kalman 17@/forum/discussions Now I know that many of you love Dragon Con, and really it
sounds awesome but from a dealer’s point of view this convention was pretty bad
for us.

It seems that the man has a pretty “hands off,
zero-tolerance policy” towards venders. There are three dealer’s rooms, so it’s
hard to find the vender you want, and there doesn’t seem to be any organization
to who is in what room.

I know for a fact that there were people looking for me who
couldn’t find me, but to make matters worse out table was stuck off in the
corner past the fire exit, the isles in front of us was far too small, so
people couldn’t get through them, and the lovely, friendly and dun loving
people made long-winded playful announcements over the PA all weekend. Not to
mention the large lady dressed in blue who (and I’m not exaggerating) believed
she was a super hero and that her cats were her crime-fighting network. The woman
spoke non stop in that insipid that hasn’t been popular since the 1950s. I had
to listen to her prattle for an hour before I got so fed up I started throwing things
at her. Of course this only made her decide that I was a villain and she was
saving the lives of the other con-goers by standing there. I here tell that she
got kicked out of the Stan-lee panel for passing on a question… from her cats…
about the mice in his floorboards.

Now my friend who will be referred here-as only as
Chef-Master P, has been going to dragoncon since back in the day. I like to
imagine that the rest of the year he spends his time cooking up and cultivating
various and ingenious mind-altering substances, which he loads into his duffle,
and then one weekend out of the year drags this brownie filled bag all the way
from his home to the convention. He always comes back with stories about how he
met Stan Lee, or got on a microphone at an after-hours bar with MC Chris.

From a fan’s point of view the masses of dealers, Playful
announcements and costumes too big to fit through doors is incredible. But
stick someone in a booth where they have to beg for attention all day, and
listen to the same PA jokes over and over again, and be up at 8 every morning
working till 9, and the parties and after-hours events become just tiresome.

I’m certain that if I’d had a better spot, or some more help
behind the booth the convention would have been very different but alas that was
not the case. I understand exactly how Ryan Sohmer felt, and had I not
previously been informed of his upset with the convention I’d have caused a fit
myself.

And no offence to Atlanta’s residence but I just can’t call
a city where you can count eh skyline a full City. Maybe I’m spoiled, but 11
shadows on the horizon does not make a major metropolis. Nor does pouring BBQ
sauce over everything. Despite the fact that the BBQ was indeed amazing… I did
not expect to see BBQ sauce on my shrimp cocktail, plain cheese pizza, or chef
salad, though by the end of my trip, I did expect the strange looks when I
asked for it sans the sauce.

All in all I’m thankful to be home, having restored power
and Internet to my house (damn you Con Edison!) The air conditioner is once
again blearing and I once again have over 100gigs of music at my ready
disposal.

The …and Chris archives have been fixed, I’m uploading more
DLC (there is a desktop of the map incoming today) and I queued up the next 10
or so cards and next bunch of …and Chris comics.

Next up: New York Comic Con! Hope to see you there! With any
luck we’ll even get Arron to show up in the dress I’m buying for him!

Wave City Tour Guide http://www.madinkpress.com/forum/discussion/15/wave-city-tour-guide Wed, 01 Sep 2010 03:36:40 -0400 Kalman 15@/forum/discussions The invention and implementation of simulated sensation, in it’s time was hailed as an end to drug use. Why would you buy heroin when you could plug into a system and feel the effects without the chemical dependency? With sufficient programming and medical advancements you could even compensate for the body’s own endorphin release (though an addictive personality will still construct an emotional dependency). Unfortunately drug use is still almost as popular today as it was before sim-rigs became a household item. You can’t run sims while you are working, and their inherent falsehood will never truly replace reality. No matter how far technology comes, some people will always slit though the cracks, and turn to two-bit drug dealers and swindlers for a quick fix.

Okay so Mad Ink’s age can be measured in many forms. When I was about 13 I had a friend who used to constantly remind me that I was nobody’s worst nightmare. I in turn assured him that I was at the very least everybody’s Mildy Annoying Daydream. We decided to incorporate (in our hearts at least) and so the earliest form of MAD Inc, was born. As time scampered on, Mad Inc went through many versions from “Movies Are Dreams” incorporated to the Current “Mad Ink, Inc” and here we are.

As far as the US government is concerned Mad Ink, Inc has existed for one and a half years. We have been paying corporate taxes since January 2009. City of Fever was our first product, and we launched it at MoCCA Fest in June last year, so really, when you get down to it, October really is nowhere near Mad Ink’s birthday.

But And Chris, was actually launched a year ago, at Wizard world New York, and the original NYCC back in February last year was where I showcased the first of City of Fever and got Mike Carey to agree to put his name on the back of my book.

So look out NYCC, you are now officially our birthday!

We’re coming up on the 50th strip of …And Chris, and we are finally (almost) fully functional! we have over 500 people visiting the site on a regular basis.

I’ll have been working with Banu for almost four years now (dear god it has been that long, hasn’t it?) and Aodhan for over one.

And I’ll tell you what. Anyone who comes up to my booth at NYCC and wishes us a happy birthday, I’ll give a free tarot card print or Rast poster.

We’ll be at booth 2423, see you all there!

To die, to sleep no more, and by a sleep to say we end. http://www.madinkpress.com/forum/discussion/27/to-die-to-sleep-no-more-and-by-a-sleep-to-say-we-end. Tue, 30 Nov 1999 00:00:00 -0500 Kalman 27@/forum/discussions And Thus NYCC is finished.

I’m told by a certain talking animal sidekick, that I need
to do a report on the convention. truth be told, if not for the stomach ache,
soreness in my feet, back, neck, forehead chest, hands arms, legs, migraine,
and constant ringing in my ears, I wouldn’t even know it had happened.

Unless I counted the dip in my inventory, or reflected on
the deep and crushing weight upon my soul enhanced by a weekend of selling
myself like a cheep harlot.

All in all, the con was fantastic by all accounts. I met a
girl who was actually named Jazmin (yes she spelled it that way) who was cute
as a button. The Con staff was friendly and helpful. We had a great spot, I
hung out with Web comics ink, and Blind ferret, and I introduced my work to
over two hundred new people.

Unfortunately I still feel like crap. Dragon Con really took
the wind out of my sails and getting back up on that horse is proving more
difficult than I would have thought. I’m told by all these wonderful people
that the way I feel I actually pretty typical. By the end of the first year,
you start to loose steam, and it’s another goof four years until you get your
wind back.

I’m told that these doldrums are what separates the great
from the forgotten, and that it only lasts for five years before you find out
if you’re going to make it.

I take solace in the fact that I really have done something
grand. I take solace in the fact that my few friends are like brothers. (Apologies
to my real brother, I didn’t mean to lump him in with Aaron.) And I take solace
in the fact that even if I am prostituting myself, at least my clients are
walking away satisfied.

Still, I feel a lot like used up and thrown away after a
weekend like this.
